hoshi to sora to kumo no ma ni ma ni
Between the Stars, the Sky, and the Clouds

(Oda Yuu)
Lyrics: MAKI
Arranged by: kenya
(Defectus of the Distant Winds)
Circle: Seventh Heaven MAXION
Event: Kouroumu 7
Original theme: Year-Round Absorbed Curiosity [

Requested by: Adelheid

Like the last Seventh Heaven MAXION song I translated, some archaic language is used throughout this track. The last part of the title, 間に間に (ma ni ma ni) is apparently an old form of the current 随に (ma ni ma ni), meaning ‘at the mercy of.’ However, I translated it as ‘Between,’ based on how it is used throughout the song.

There are some beautiful images in the original Japanese text, but some phrases didn’t really translate into English that well. The main image is that of a woman, pining for her dead lover, though she can feel his presence out there…

Translation

The countless stars sparkling in the night sky…
It is as if I treat each one of them as you.

It is for the briefest moment, yet it does not wane!
No matter where you are, I can certainly sense you.

The light that gently shines upon the moon,
Rather than tenderly wrapping you up,
Is like a star, which had rained momentarily, eagerly, more than anyone…

These trivial actions, and everything else…
My covered eyes, and even the heavy sigh I give out…
All of them are proof that I am alive!
I shall disappear, and they will ask where I am heading…

Before long, the morning sun will rise, and the stars will fade to white and disappear.
It’s only a little, but I feel your presence, somewhere far away.

However, such a residue is warm, and I am fond of it.
I shall hold it to my chest and sleep! Let’s meet again, okay?

Though it is a clear morning, and the stars cannot be seen,
Yes… even though it was just the smallest amount, between the clouds…

I felt your presence. However, since who knows when, even that,
And the appeals of thousands of stars, are no longer answered.

Aah, I knew that you were already gone…
My sense of loss is just like ice.

Though there may be nothing that can thaw this ice,
I have calmed down, and for some reason, I am here.

Thus, the night invades the sun again, and descends…
It is the law of nature, one that has been repeated for eternity.

Furthermore, I, who imitate this, am yet another law,
And perhaps I will join in as one part of a star…

Before long, the morning sun will rise, and the stars will fade to white and disappear.
For the first time in a while, I feel your presence, somewhere in the world.

However, such a residue is warm, and I am fond of it.
I shall hold it to my chest and sleep! Thank you…
