The Strange Everyday Life of the Flying Shrine Maiden [

Update [22/06/2015]: I fixed up the translator’s note. I actually didn’t intend to have it in there, but by the time I realised I left it in, it was too late to get rid of it…

The last Comp track from this album. I really like those “The Strange Everyday Life of the Flying Shrine Maiden” parts scattered throughout – that melody is really effective. The role of the speaker seems to shift between Kosuzu (the beginning) and Nitori (the choruses – there’s a bit of weird slang in them, but I did my best). There’s also plenty of references to the titular ‘Seven Wonders.’ If you’d like to learn more about them, I recommend visiting this site.

yake ni samui yoru wa ie no naka ni ite ne
ushimitsu no pareedo
mite minu furi wo shite

I’m inside my house during an awfully cold night,
And in the dead of night, a parade takes place…
I see it, and pretend I didn’t see it.

hora kootta mizuumi ga shabetta
hora “oiteke…” oitekebori no koe

Listen! The frozen lake spoke.
Listen! “Leave it behind…” It’s the voice of the leave-it-behind straggler.

hitozato hanareta basho he
fuwari to ukanda chouchin ga
retsu wo nashi yurayura koushin
“ashi wo arae yo” to unaru ashi arai yashiki banashi
makafushigi nanafushigi
bakashi wa makashite he no kappa

The paper lanterns, floating gently in the air,
Formed a line and marched off, swaying
Towards a place away from the Human Village.
“Wash my feet!” is moaned in the tale of the foot-washing mansion.
The Seven Wonders – what a profound mystery!
Leave the bewitching to me. It’s a cinch! (1)

tanukibayashi odori okuri hyoushigi utsu
harewataru yozora ni ryuujin no me hikaru

The tanuki dance around, sounding the following wooden clappers.
The eyes of the dragon king shine in the night sky, which has cleared up.

hora yomichi ni kaion ga hibiku yo
mi wo hisomete futon de maruku nare

Listen! A mysterious sound reverberates through the streets at night.
Hide yourself! Cower upon your futon…

chotto dake chotto dake no koto
fuyu dake fuyu dake no koto da yo
kannin ne warugi wa nai no yo
kocchi ni wa kocchi no jijou ga
socchi ni wa socchi no tte yatsu yo
makafushigi nanafushigi
bakashi wa makashite he no kappa

It’s just a little, just a little, little thing.
It only happens, only happens in winter.
Pardon me! I don’t mean any harm.
As for me, I’ve got my own reasons,
And you’ve got yours. I’m that sort of person.
The Seven Wonders – what a profound mystery!
Leave the bewitching to me. It’s a cinch!

nakayoshi koyoshide ite ne
nandakanda itta tte
nagai tsukiai dakara
korekara mo yoroshiku

You’ll stay friends with me, right?
Even if I told you this and that,
I’ve know you for a long time,
So I’ll rely on you after this, too!

chotto dake chotto dake no koto
fuyu dake fuyu dake no koto da yo
kannin ne warugi wa nai no yo
kocchi ni wa kocchi no jijou ga
socchi ni wa socchi no tte yatsu yo
makafushigi nanafushigi
bakashi wa makashite he no kappa

It’s just a little, just a little, little thing.
It only happens, only happens in winter.
Pardon me! I don’t mean any harm.
As for me, I’ve got my own reasons,
And you’ve got yours. I’m that sort of person!
The Seven Wonders – what a profound mystery!
Leave the bewitching to me. It’s a cinch!

(1) へのかっぱ (he no kappa) is a set phrase meaning ‘a cinch/something easy to do.’ Since the speaker is [presumably] Nitori, it doubles as wordplay, since it has her species name ‘kappa’ in it.
