Aquaterrarium

Lyrics: azuki
Arranged by: kaztora
Album: On That Day, I Looked Up at the Sky (その日私は空を見上げた)

Original Theme: Locked Girl ~ The Girl’s Secret Room (ラクトガール ~ 少女密室 )

The final track from this album! As can be expected from azuki, this one has some wonderful images, painting a poignant picture of Patchouli, alone. An ‘aquaterrarium’ is literally defined as a “A box or aquarium adapted for water and a sloping bank of earth and rocks in which to culture snails and other amphibious animals” (Merriam-Webster Dictionary) – but it’s used here as a sort of metaphor, as can be seen towards the end of the song.

_ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _

Happiness – though everyone has their own tastes, it’s something everyone possesses.
I was skim reading through a catalogue, in which people were smiling happily.

I bought a rectangular fish tank, so I could submerge my loneliness.
It’s as if the books are swimming. They sway, sway, sway…

It’s okay if I get laughed at, called insignificant and foolish.
I won’t be bothered in my miniature, precious secret base…
I wonder what sort of child lives here?
I think nostalgically about my aquaterrarium.

I felt as if I could remain pure in this miniature garden, in which all becomes transparent,
But look! There’s someone swimming, all alone. Like me, they smile slightly.

Inside this unpolluted fish tank,
Are guppies so beautiful they don’t fit in.

Though I held it with both hands, happiness spilled out,
So I sighed as it left me and escaped…
Even my nostalgic heart’s silverfish
Swim merrily inside my aquaterrarium.

Certainly, this place is like a big fish tank,
And I am alone inside this sealed-off world.
I’d decided that someday I’d try and leave this place,
But I still haven’t left. Why? Why? Why?
It’s because it doesn’t suit me.

How long will I pretend to be strong, living here?
A distance so close and yet so far away, like a misbuttoned button…
The truth is, I miss the hustle and bustle. This loneliness that comes from being alone… I’ve been deceiving myself!

Though I try to act tough, to pretend that I’m fine with being alone,
You, reflected in the mirror, aren’t smiling.
The fish lightly swim in the printed text. It’s a single aquaterrarium within the world…

If nobody’s looking, it’s okay to cry, right?

Hi! This is also a good song. I can feel Patchouli’s loneliness and the last phrase touched me.
By the way, I have opinion for this lyrics, here.

” Like me, they smile slightly.”

If I try to translate this into Japanese, will be
    私みたいに少し笑うの.
This is slightly different from 私みたいで.
I think of this lyrics as ‘fishes swim alone like me,so make me smiling.’
I think fishes resembling her makes her smiling.
It’s just my opinion and I’m unable to find adequate words because I haven’t studied enough, but please take this into consideration. (I don’t mean you should correct this because we can’t say which is true…)Keep it up! Thanks.

Thanks for the comment again! I think the contrast between the happy-sounding music and the lonely lyrics is really effective.

Thanks for pointing out the 私みたいで part. I think I just assumed that it meant the same thing as 私みたいに when I translated it a year ago, but looking at it now, I can see how it can be interpreted differently (^_^)

Reading that makes me wonder who 一人で泳いでる姿 is. Is it Patchoulli’s reflection, or is it the fish that are talked about elsewhere in the song? Maybe it’s even related to 鏡に映された貴女は笑えてない later on…

Either way, thanks again for your comment! I’m always happy to get feedback on interpretations of Japanese grammar, because I’m still only a student of Japanese…!

Hmm…I’ve thought it as latter one, but…
Does she really have fishes? We can think that fishes is metaphor for herself or books in the fish tank. It says just ‘bought a fish tank’.
Being faithful in lyrics, 一人で泳いでる姿 is fish, in my opinion. However, former one is also interesting.
Another point I’m interested in is 喧騒が
I listened to this song for the first time,I heard it 幻想郷. I think kazutora might have intended it, haven’t he? I want to listen to your opinion.

To be honest, I never considered that 喧噪 sounds similar to 幻想郷, but listening to it again, you’re right! It gives the sentence a bit of a double meaning – Patchoulli misses the ‘hustle and bustle,’ but she also misses Gensokyo, too.

Is 喧騒 a common word? If it isn’t, that supports the interpretation that azuki chose the word deliberately because it sounds like 幻想郷. Either way, it’s a very interesting point, so thanks for bringing it up! (^_^)

        Oh,lyricist is azuki, yeah.
喧騒 is used in its way ,if not usually.
At least, It’s used more often than 紙魚(It’s embarrassing, but I didn’t know its mean…)However, this is Toho song, so he might give it two meanings…
I’m happy to talk with you about my favorite songs! I’m looking forward to new lyrics!
