Our Future

Vocals: Ranko
Lyrics: Ranko
Arranged by: Comp
Album: Lunar Probe [ゲツメンタンサ] 【Official Site】
Circle: Butaotome (豚乙女)
Event: C89
Original Theme: Voyage 1969 [

“The Noah’s Ark of the 20th century flew into space, carrying with it hopes and fears. However, it seems that just its hopes were left behind on the moon.
Here in the ‘future,’ in the 21st century, only fears and a handful of illusions seem to be all that remain.”

So says ZUN’s comments regarding the original theme. Interestingly, ‘Our’ is consistently written as 人類 [‘jinrui’ – humanity] throughout the song. This makes me feel that the speaker isn’t human, but is trying to position themselves as one. Unless it’s a single person using their experiences to comment on humanity… Either way, I think it’s a great arrangement, and I love the rhythm of the lyrics.

_ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _

bokura ga nozonda no wa konna mirai ka?
kaketa haguruma umaku mawaru kowasa yo

Did we wish for such a future?
This is our fear – broken gears that function well.

norarikurari furimawashita ego wa
kiba wo muite osoikakaru

Lazily, lazily, the ego we brandished
Will bare its fangs and attack us…

itsuka kako ni natte dare mo inaku natte
miteru mono ga mina kuchite shimatte mo
“mata ka” tte warau dake tsuki wa damatteru
kizuku koto mo naku bokura kurikaeshite

Someday, this will become the past, and everyone will die.
Though everything I can see will rot away,
The moon will be silent, just laughing “Again?” to itself.
Without realising it, we will repeat everything once more.

iku ate ga nai kara sa sora wo mezashita
kandou wa doko e yara moto no mokuami

Because we had nowhere to go, we aimed for the skies.
Where will our passions take us…? Right back to where we started.

koko ga doko de watashi wa dare?
nante, wakaru… wakaru?
kami wo mushiru

Where am I? Who am I?
Hah. I know… don’t I?
I tear out my hair.

itsuka yume no naka dareka waratteta
kami mo mihanashita aoi hoshi no uta
kieta sakaime wo zutto sagashiteru
noa no hakobune wa itte shimatta no ni

Someone was laughing in a dream I once had.
This is the song of the blue planet that God, too, abandoned.
I will always search for the border that vanished,
Though Noah’s Ark has already left…

itsuka kako ni natte dare mo inaku natte
miteru mono ga mina kuchite shimatte mo
“mata ka” tte warau dake tsuki wa damatteru
kizuku koto mo naku bokura kurikaeshite

Someday, this will become the past, and everyone will die.
Though everything I can see will rot away,
The moon will be silent, just laughing “Again?” to itself.
Without realising it, we will repeat everything once more.

Thank you very much for the translations!

Voyage 1969 is my fav, yet I found the vocal arranges are very rare. The arrange came out really good. It feel nostalgic and futuristic at the same time.

The lyrics really impressed me. I thought it’s used Lunarian’s POV but it’s also work well with cosmonaut’s POV. It made me speechless so–yeah. This song ia really amazing!

      You’re welcome! 🙂
I completely forgot that Butaotome arranged this theme before (明日の過去 from TRASH BOX), but to be honest, I like this arrangement better. Either way, I love the original theme too, so more arrangements of it are always a good thing…!
