Like the last Vocaloid song I translated, this one deals with passion and love. Umetora made it clear on their blog that the title is pronounced ‘LaLaLove,’ but the original Japanese title uses the kanji 危 (‘danger’) at the end. Perhaps it could be interpreted as ‘dangerous love’? Either way, it seems like Umetora forgot why they wrote it the way they did…

According to the lyrics page, the concept behind this song is “love and passion take different forms for different people, so what on Earth is it?!”

(1) The last section of this line (爛まんショー ‘ran man shoo’), uses the kanji 爛 (‘ran’ – brilliant). It appears to be a corrupted form of the phrase ワンマンショー (‘wan man shoo’), as written here.

This track is based on the short story ‘The Restaurant of Many Orders,’ written by Kenji Miyazawa. It’s quite short, so I highly recommend reading it either before or after reading this song’s translation. A good translation of the short story can be found here.

While translating this, I realised that I haven’t translated many of EastNewSound’s previous works. This particular lyricist has their own unique style that makes it more difficult than usual to find out who is doing what to whom. For example, there isn’t a single 私 (watashi – I) or 貴方 (anata – you) to be found. Instead, you have to rely on the verbs themselves to fill that stuff in. Because of this, the pronouns I’ve put in are based on my own personal interpretation, and are not set in stone.

The title follows the same structure as the original theme’s title. Unfortunately, it doesn’t come across as effectively in English…

I have a feeling that the speaker is comparing themselves to the divine wind. Because of this, I kept those particular sections ambiguous. For example, see “The divine wind no longer blows for the sake of humans, // Passing through this lake for the sake of illusions.” The subject of the second line could either be [the wind] or [I] depending on how you interpret it.

It seems like this song details the creation of the universe, but it also seems to detail the experiences of a single person as they gaze at the stars. Perhaps each individual forms their own ‘universe’ from how they feel as they gaze up into the night sky…

By the way, you’d think that the title should be translated as something like ‘The Planet of Sand.’ But when I searched for how the term is used and translated, ‘Star Sand’ popped up more often. It makes me think of the stars as grains of sand upon the dark sea of the night sky…

A melancholic song, full of regret and unfulfilled passions…

(I decided to leave the English parts of the song alone this time.)

_ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _

It’s too late

It’s too late
subete umi no soko e to kieta
koko wa yume ja nakute
michita tsuki ga kakete iku you ni
mukishitsu na kako ga nigete iku

It’s too late.
Everything has vanished to the bottom of the ocean.
I’m not dreaming now.
Like the full moon beginning to wane,
My cold past runs away.

You don’t seem to understand, right?
This is only a castle of sand
Had you were under the delusion
That there’s your place you would be in heaven

anata no koe ga kikoenai furi shite waratteta nda
mado ni utsutta kanjou kara me wo somuketa

I laughed, pretending I couldn’t hear your voice.
I turned away from my feelings reflected in the mirror.

Break this lie
Close my eyes
The beast inside me keep in sideway
I’m lost in the shadow

Break this lie
kudake chitta maboroshi
anata ga nokoshita sono nooto wa hakushi no mama
Close my eyes
itami dake wo nokoshi
The beast inside me keep in sideway
I’m lost in the shadow

Break this lie.
The illusion is all smashed up.
The note you left behind is still blank.
Close my eyes.
I leave only my pain behind.
The beast inside me keep in sideway
I’m lost in the shadow

kanbi na yume ni kokoro yaketsuite
me wo samasenai yo

My heart yearns for sweet dreams.
I can’t wake up.

Break this li(f)e

tsubomi no mama warete shimatta garasu no hana
sono hahen wa nibuku hikaru
“omoide” ni naranakatta kioku no naka de

The glass flower was smashed apart whilst still a bud.
Its fragments dully shine
In memories that could not become ‘memories.’

ato dore kurai iki wo tometara yume wo mireru kana
nigirishimeta migite wa ima mo maigo no mama

How much longer must I hold my breath before I can dream?
My right hand is still clenched. I’m lost.

ashita wo terasu tomoshibi
kienaide kienaide
tsumetaku natta azarea
karenaide karenaide
watashi wa dare no mae de sakebeba ii no oshiete
aa naze akumu wa sameru made sore ni kidzukanai no

Flames illuminate tomorrow.
Don’t vanish, don’t vanish…
The azaleas have grown cold.
Don’t wither, don’t wither…
Tell me who I should scream at!
Aah… why can’t we tell we’re having nightmares until they’re over?

Where the “Backspace key” ?

Still awake…

Still awake…

Still awake…
I struggle in vain.
The daybreak I hold in my hands is so fragile…

So, break this lie
Close my eyes
The beast inside me keep in sideway
I’m lost in the nightmare

So, break this lie
kudakechitta maboroshi
mabuta no uragawa de kieta
Close my eyes
itami dake wo nokoshi
The beast inside me keep in sideway
I’m lost in the nightmare

So, break this lie.
The illusion is all smashed up.
It vanished behind my eyelids.
Close my eyes.
I leave only my pain behind.
The beast inside me keep in sideway
I’m lost in the shadow

Break this lie
Close my eyes

Event: C83
Original Theme: Hartmann’s Youkai Girl  [

はじまり (hajimari) normally means ‘beginning,’ but I ended up translating the title as ‘A song of Starting Over.’ In other words, I interpreted ‘beginning’ as ‘beginning (again)’.

As a whole, I think this song is about Koishi deciding to close her third eye and, as a result, ‘start over.’ She wants to forget about everything she’s seen so far with her third eye and start again. When she says “nice to meet you,” it might be because she’s looking at herself as an entirely new person…

The ‘transparent things’ referred to around the middle are possibly people’s feelings. She doesn’t want to be able to see right through people, so she ‘breaks the glass.’ Being unable to see what people are feeling means she risks hurting herself or others, but she wants to be able to see this danger as something beautiful.

I shall forget everything
That I’ve seen up until now.
I shall rewrite everything
That I’ve seen up until now.

kuro to shiro de umaru sekai
zenbu kowashite shimaou
shiro to kuro ga mazari au sekai

I shall destroy this world,
A world covered in black and white.
There’s nothing certain at all
In this world, in which white and black mix together.

yurete sekai ga hirakete
kagamigoshi no jibun mite
chotto hazukashii kedo

I was shaken, and the world opened up before me.
I looked at myself in the mirror,
And though I felt a bit embarrassed…
“Nice to meet you!”

te wo nobashitemo mata kizutsukete
tsukami kaketa mono surinukete
omoidoori ni ikanai hi demo
atarashii nanika ga aru kara

Though I stretch my hands out, I just hurt others again
And I slip through the things I come close to grasping.
Even on days when nothing goes my way,
There’s something new, so…

toumei na mono nante iranai
omoikiri tatakitsuketa
wareta gurasu no ayausa wo
utsukushii to omoeta no nara

I don’t need transparent things –
I struck out at them with all my might.
If only I could think of the danger of broken glass
As something beautiful…

anata no kimochi nante sa
shiranai gurai ga choudo ii
watashi no kimochi de sura sa

I don’t know what you’re feeling
But that’s just fine with me
Because I don’t even know
My own feelings.

dare mo inai ushiro
sutaato shita bakari dashi

Nobody’s behind me
And I’ve only just started, too!
But I don’t mind, even if I can’t overtake
The people in front of me…

wakaranaku naru koto de shika
wakaru sekai ga soko ni aru no
saigo ni nokotta pai hitotsu
nokoseru jibun ni nareru kara

There’s a world out there that you can only understand
By not understanding it.
I’ll become the sort of person
Who can save the last piece of pie for myself.

me no mae no fensu wo tobikoecha
ikenai kimari wa nai kara sa
fuwari fuwari watagashi no you ni
yasashiku uketomete hoshii na

There’s no rule out there saying
That I can’t jump over the fence before me.
I want you to gently catch me
Like soft, light cotton candy.

ame no naka no hizashi toka
orenji-iro no chiheisen toka
tachidomatte mitemo ii kara
sukoshi zutsu ippo zutsu de ii
mae ni susumetara sore de ii

It’s good to stop and look at things
Like sunlight in the rain
Or the orange horizon,
So it’s fine to take things step by step.
It’s fine if I’m moving forward.

te wo nobashitemo mata kizutsukete
tsukami kaketa mono surinukete

Though I stretch my hands out, I just hurt others again
And I slip through the things I come close to grasping.
Even on days when nothing goes my way,
There’s something new, so…

Update: I updated the translation for accuracy thanks to some helpful feedback from 空見りんき

Listen to the track here!

So, this is an arrangement of the Japanese version of ‘Marching Through Georgia,’ a song that was written at the end of the American Civil War. The Japanese version was released in 1918. It’s basically a kind of protest song, providing a satirical look at Japanese society at the time. It has a lot of in-jokes and cultural references, which made it hard to translate. So, in other words, what’s presented below is only my interpretation. I wanted to keep the translation notes brief, so I’ve limited them to explaining why I translated the first katakana section the way I did. Of course, if you have questions about any of the references, please leave a comment!

I also made use of the following Japanese sites in forming my interpretation: 1, 2, 3.

The centre of Tokyo is Marunouchi
Hibiya Park is the home of the Diet.
The Imperial Theatre is stylish.
That stately palace is the Metropolitan Police Department.
The government ministries are all in a row. Babasaki-mon is there, too.
The Tokio Marine Building and Tokyo Station are also there…

Prosperous Asakusa is in Tokyo, too.
It contains Kaminarimon, shrine shops, and Sensouji.
The pidgeons coo, and the old lady sells beans.
Movies, skyscrapers, and the Asakusa amusement park.
Sushi, okoshi, beef, and tempura.

Pilfering from the pickpockets and the beggars…

I wonder what the pride of Tokyo is…
It’s crawling with 3 million people
Who live without making rice
And bow their heads to their irrational mayor.
Also, how admirable –
They listen carefully to what their mayor has to say,
All the while eating soybean scraps and growing thinner…

Tokyo’s specialty is its packed trains.
No matter how long you wait, you’ll never get on one!
You need to fight to get on. You’ll risk your life.
Even when a less crowded train finally arrives…
“No, no!” With a wave of a hand,
The train heads off once again without stopping.
What, is it broken down? What sort of shabby train is this?!
The mayor’s such a cheapskate! Pai no pai no pai!
With western clothes and an upright collar, fry, fry fry!
The world’s a mess, heigh-ho! Pai no pai no pai!
Parisian coats, bananas – fry, fry, fry!

_ _ _ _ _

(1) ラメチャン (ramechan) appears to be a corrupted version of でたらめ (detarame – random/messed up). ギッチョンチョン (gicchonchon) is apparently a nonsense word used to fill in space, and パイノパイノパイ appears to represent laughter. So basically, ‘even if the world’s a mess, we just need to laugh it off!’

(2) Another interpretation sees sentence (1) as referring to the low standards of hygiene seen in Tokyo at the time. This is why フライ フライ フライ (furai furai furai) is translated as ‘fry’ instead of ‘fly’ – basically, hygiene standards were low because people were cooking on the streets.
