The title of this song is a reference to a traditional Japanese proverb that, at its heart, means ‘nobody knows what will happen tomorrow.’ Here, the proverb has been translated literally to maintain the image of cherry blossoms, which reappears throughout the song.

Even though this song is heavily related to Yuyuko, I can’t help but feel like it’s told from the perspective of the Saigyou Ayakashi. It seems to see Yuyuko as it’s prized possession, or something like that.

みちびかれた さくらびと
おのおのの 顔 みくらべて

michibikareta sakurabito
ono ono no kao mikurabete

The cherry blossom admirers were led here.
I compare each of their faces.

ことのはを さくらにのせ
うつくしい 彼岸のしらべ

koto no ha wo sakura ni nose
utsukushii higan no shirabe

I bequeath words to the cherry blossoms –
The words to a beautiful Higan melody.

すぐれ みめよし 無垢なもの
積善の家 余慶有りなどという

sugure mimeyoshi muku na mono
shakuzen no ie yokei ari nado to iu

With superior looks and a pure face,
They are known for a lineage of good deeds and blessings…

ああ あなたにほほえむ
そう ごまかしじゃなく

aa anata ni hohoemu
sou gomakashi ja naku

Aah… I smile at you
Yes. It is no deception.

いま しとしとと めぐむ
ただ ゆたけし 故由

ima shito shito to megumu
tada yutakeshi yueyoshi

Now, the rain drizzles down and the greenery buds.
It is simply grand.

こころたけ こともなしに
いつくしむ 鐘美のひとよ

kokoro take koto mo nashi ni
itsukushimu shoubi no hito yo

The new year arrives safely.
I love you, my one true beauty…

ひとりだち みやびやかで
しのぶれど 色 出でにけり

hitori dachi miyabiyaka de
shinoburedo iro ide ni keri

Independent, elegant…
I promised that nobody would know of our love.

わが恋はものや思うと
人の問うまで あなたにささげよう

waga ai wa mono ya omou to
hito no tou made anata ni sasageyou

But I could not hide it in my face,
And others began to question me. I shall devote myself to you… (1)

ああ 千変万化の花 きまぐれのかお

aa senpenbanka no hana kimagure no kao

Aah, ever-changing flowers, you have such whimsical faces.

三日 見ぬ間の桜も
ちる 春宵のまに

mikka minu ma no sakura mo
chiru shunshou no ma ni

The cherry blossoms, which I had not seen in three days, (2)
Fell during a spring evening.

ああ 千変万化の花 きまぐれのかお
そう 明日ありと思う 心の仇桜

aa senpenbanka no hana kimagure no kao
sou asu ari to omou kokoro no adazakura

Aah, ever-changing flowers, you have such whimsical faces.
Yes, the cherry blossoms believe they will bloom tomorrow.

(1) The above three lines are directly quoted from a poem by Taira no Kanemori. For a more accurate translation and interpretation, consult this site.

(2) This line is a contracted form of a traditional Japanese proverb, 世の中は三日見ぬ間の桜かな. It compares the world to cherry blossoms, which are quick to change and fall.
