Also, a bit of a content warning: the lyrics are quite violent and graphic, so steer clear if you’d rather not read about that sort of stuff (^_^)b

This is apparently the final installment in masa’s ‘The Story of the Kitsune and the Demon’ series.

About the title: I went with the commonly-used translation to be on the safe side, but if we split it up into two components, 鬼[の]美影 and 演舞[の]狂, I propose that it would actually end up as something like ‘The Demon’s Beautiful Figure and the Madness of Their Dance‘. If you have any thoughts on this, let me know!

Also, funny fact: 狐ノ嫁入リ is also used to refer to a sun shower. I think it’s used in a more literal sense here, though…

aijou, urami, seiyoku, satsui hitori, futari, san, yon, go, roku

watashi no sewayaku yatoware kojiki ni ijou na satsui ga waite komiageru
watashi wa aorare akairo no kimono kimi no nukumori de okashiku narisou.

Love, malice, desire, murderous impulses… One person, two people, three, four, five, six.
A rain of 1000 needles brushed against the dying daimyo’s neck as his people starved.
An unusual murderous impulse welled up in the starving beggars I hired to serve me.
I was stirred up by that red kimono. Your warmth will make me go mad.

hamono wo nigitte nani wo miteru no? modorenu jibun to o-hanashi shimasho?

What are you looking at, grasping that blade of yours? Will you talk to your irrecoverable past self?

maihime kidori de hanao wo keri age
shiranu kataranu wa makari tooran sa
chimamire utahime kubi nashi maihime
sono kao wa hakuchi tsunbo no geta waza

I kicked up my geta straps, imitating a dancing girl.
Not knowing and not speaking is forbidden.
The songstress was bloodstained, and the dancing girl was headless.
Their faces were foolish, their geta movements unskilled.

hitori, futari dorei wo narabete kimi no nukumori de okashiku narisou
aijou, urami, seiyoku, satsui hitori, futari, san, yon, go, roku

Lining up the slaves: one, two. Your warmth will make me go mad.
Love, malice, desire, murderous impulses… One person, two people, three, four, five, six.

nokogiribiki warawazu kitsune no yomeiri
subete wo kaese to monogoi wa kataru
kagami ni waratte akanbou harande
subete ga owaru to katarezu bakeneko

The ones who died by sawing do not smile at the fox’s wedding.
The beggars speak, saying “give it all back!”
Smiling at the mirror, with a baby in her womb.
The bakeneko cannot speak if everything comes to an end.

koyoi no misemono mamonaku kaien hitori, futari dorei wo narabete

watashi wa aorare kimi wo mettazashi kimi no nukumori de okashiku narisou

Soon, the curtain will raise on tonight’s spectacle. One, two, I line the slaves up.
When the curtain rises, you’ll forget everything. Now, welcome! Welcome to the pit of savages.
The brutish audience has their eyes wide open. It begins, and they bathe in spurts of blood.
I’m all worked up. I stab you, over and over. Your warmth will make me go mad.

nekoyanagi no shita machi tsudzuketeru kubi ni nawa wo kake ningyou goraku

I continue to wait beneath the pussy willows. I amuse myself with dolls, placing their heads in nooses.

monogoi rouba to kojiki no shuuraku

karasu ni makasete tokoro de tsuburete
obiete kurasu sa sore dake no koto sa

The beggar hag begs in the beggars’ settlement
But not a single coin is on the corpses at the gate.
Left to the crows, they’re crushed where they lie.
Be frightened and live! It’s as simple as that.

kitsune no yomeiri onibi ni okurare

Escorted to the fox’s wedding by the will-o’-wisps,
I entrusted them to the dolls, saying “All is forgiven.”

Love, malice, desire, murderous impulses… One person, two people, three, four, five, six.
The lonely bride lost her umbrella. She hides, acting as if all was stripped away.
Who’s next? Who’s next, I wonder? Sleep brings with it solitary darkness, in the threshold between dreams and reality.

saigo ni daite to anata ni tsubuyaku
akete? akete? akete? akete?

I embrace you in the end and I whisper:
“Open up? Open up? Open up? Open up?”
