TAMAONSEN’s lyrics are always interesting to read and interpret, and these are no exception. The longer stanzas feel like a sort of stream of consciousness coming from Aya, though it’s not exactly clear who’s talking or who is being affected by the various events that take place. Perhaps the song is about Aya doing her job and eventually contacting human society…?

More to the point, why is this an ‘apology letter’? Perhaps the term is being used in a tongue-in-cheek manner…

The moon had waned. A flash was set especially for the transformed youkai.
If being spotted is fatal, then the ground will ring as I kick off with my single-toothed geta.
Now look, everyone! This reporter’s still working, scattering articles all around. I’m passing through.
I circle around the mountains. I’m still determined: it’s like a fever.
I’ve overcome the heated exchanges that come from mere curiosity. Even hoaxes are half-hearted.
Articles surrounding excitement always stand alone.
This is the tengu’s peephole. I hide in the trees, on the lookout for physical attacks or ambushes.
From there, I gives birth to her words. There’s no way I’ll overlook any changes from beyond my lens.
“I’ll go easy on you!” I’m on the cusp of exposing them.
I hastily write. The letters dancing on my shuffled pages are sacred:
Banned for humans. Indecipherable. A peculiar appearance.
Abuse lies in every important point. If it’s read, they’ll be in a mess. This is the tengu’s apology letter.

The leaves and the words sway from side to side. (1)
The trees upon that mountain change colour and experience autumn.
The leaves and the words gently fall
And if those words are destined to be found someday…

古きは死んでいき手にした人間に求めぬ真剣味など

Then things of antiquity will die, including honesty, unwanted by the humans who obtained those words.

I’ll make that new society into my hideout. I’ll bewilder them until they change their behaviour. Not long now…
Like that, I mislead them, unleashing the mountain’s inhabitants.
Eventual peace or occasional hostility—if you ask me, we respond systematically.
Responseless. We conceal firm resolution in our hearts.
It’s a way of informing the humans who somehow come here about the pecking order.
This symphony is born from the ruins of piety, lacking among all those at the foot of the mountain.
They come aimlessly, and things are settled. Another pair!
When reporting, I hide my tracks. I concentrate and write the facts.
The words of the tabloid paper renowned for being crooked are forgotten at once.
The dramatization of mass media…
When something happens, I’ll write it down. I’ll go to the scene at a startling speed, like a divine wind.
Things fall from my worn notebook…
The knowledgeable, yet silent humans scold me. I wore a hood.
An idealistic argument of paradise. Who will pick up the tengu’s apology letter?

(1) The wordplay in this line relies on the phonetic similarity between 木の葉 (konoha – leaves) and 言の葉 (koto no ha – words, literally ‘leaves of words).
(2) Ri is an old Japanese unit of measurement equating to almost 4 km or 2.44 miles

Just wanted to let you know there isn’t a (2) notating there’s a reference to Ri in the actual stanza

The song title’s referring to a Japanese legend of the same name in which a Tengu drops an indecipherable scroll that supposedly apologises for the previous mischief it caused.
