This song actually has a really clever title. When written as 冥土の土産, it’s a set phrase meaning ‘a good memory [to take with you when you go to the afterlife],’ but when written as メイドの土産, it means ‘the maid’s souvenir/present.’ I ultimately went with the first one because I thought that was more appropriate for the lyrics, but the second one is also a valid title since the title is written in katakana. Honestly, it’s rare to find titles that are that clever.

And here we are, at the last track of the album. Lyrics-wise, I’d say this is probably the pinnacle of the entire album. Beautiful images, references to ancient mythology… this track has it all. As a whole, it seems like this song dually refers to Tenshi’s journey through the aurora as well as traditional purification rituals known as ‘misogi’ (禊) and ‘ooharai’ (大祓).

If I added in translation notes for every single reference, I’d probably end up with over 10 notes, which is a bit too many! Instead, I decided to focus on the main points, like the names of deities and stuff like that. And as a final note, the role of the speaker appears to alternate between God and Tenshi.

A blade smouldered inside the aurora. The one who had not yet grasped it stood still, without calling upon it.

Without completely casting away her nostalgia, the maiden made her way towards that vast land,

(1) The ‘Puranas’ are ancient Hindu texts, written in Sanskrit. The word ‘Purana’ by itself means ‘old.’
(2) Dia is most likely a reference to the Roman goddess of the fields and the earth. She is represented in the lyrics as ‘大地’ (‘daichi’ – earth). Mana, written as 水 (‘mizu’ – water) in the lyrics, generally refers to the power of nature’s elemental forces.
(3) Odr is a Norse god, and he’s the husband of Freya. Apart from that, he’s relatively unknown and he’s presented as a passive figure.

More Shinra-Bansho. And more of Azuki’s awesome lyrics. Having translated a few of their tracks, I’m starting to see some patterns and recurring phrases emerging in the lyrics. One such phrase is ‘The theory of happiness’ (幸福論 – ‘koufukuron’), which refers to the writings of philosophers such as Carl Hilty. As you can probably tell, these books deal with happiness – what it is and how to achieve it. I get the feeling that the search for happiness is one of the main themes of Shinra-Bansho. Or, at least, I feel like it comes through very strongly in this album.

I struggled away at this for about 2 months, and the end result still doesn’t make sense… I wondered why the lyrics of this track were so different to the other lyrics from this album – and then I found out that Kaztora wrote them, instead of Azuki.

But yeah, this track is like some sort of children’s song. The narrative seems to be a slightly corrupted version of the regular version – this time, it’s told from the frogs’ point of view. There are heaps of references to traditional Japanese children’s games and songs, including ‘Kagome, Kagome.’ I wanted to point out all of them, but then the translation notes would have ended up being longer than the lyrics themselves… Anyway, enjoy it! Try and make up your own story about what’s going on. I don’t think there’s a right or wrong answer.

(2) This little section uses ‘tousenbou’ as a springboard to a series of puns based on similar words: ‘senbou,’ and ‘senbon.’ I made a note of it because it’s quite cool, and quite untranslatable…

This is my favourite track from this album – scratch that, it’s my favourite Liz Triangle song. Like I keep saying, I really enjoy azuki’s lyrics, and these are no exception. Since the source theme is ‘Blue Sea of 53 Minutes,’ we can assume it deals with the Renko x Merry story.

I think it’s a bit ironic that we have a dark track about Orin on the same album as ‘Doppel,’ in which Orin played a big part in helping Satori pick herself up and move forward. But whatever…

Anyway, this track is dark. The star is Orin, the cheerful ‘waste-picker’ who lives in the abandoned hell. She compares herself to the corpses she picks up and plays around with, for living alone in this grey world is the same as being dead. Like some other Shinra-Bansho tracks, there’s a gratuitous use of English in the chorus sections – I tried to stay a bit closer to the original this time, but there are areas where I had to interpret it a little.

Also, as I’m sure a lot people know already, John Doe and Jane Doe are names used for people whose identities are unknown. It’s also apparently used when referring to the identities of the deceased before they have been formally identified. I treat them as both ‘generic’ nouns and names, which leads to phrases such as “You’re a smiling John Doe.” [type 1 – ‘generic’ noun] and “I’m tired of playing alone, John Doe!” [type 2 – name]

To be honest, I tried to translate the ‘Parade Version’ of this song first, since I like it more, but this one is easier to make sense of, so I translated this one first. The second-last stanza is complicated, mainly because of the frog puns. They’re ribbit-ing. It plays on the verb ‘kaeru’ 帰る (to return home) and ‘kaeru’ 蛙 (frog), and even ‘kaeru’ 変える (to change/transform). Of course, at certain points, it’s spelled as the neutral ‘kaeru’ カエル, making it hard to tell which is which. I don’t think there’s an equivalent pun in English, so I couldn’t bring those nuances across… Unless I went with something like ‘hop along home…’

The ‘gate’ refers to a ‘torii,’ a special gate found before a shrine. They’re those red things. If you don’t know what they are, just do an image search. Also, ‘naku’ 鳴く (to cry) refers to the cries of animals, such as frogs. So keep that in mind. Finally, like usual, pronouns aren’t included in the original Japanese, so I put them in on a case-by-case basis.

Another track from Doppel. Following on from the theme of my last translation, this song is basically about a person (presumably Youmu) going on a rampage, fed up with the world. As usual, Shinra-Bansho’s (a.k.a Azuki’s) lyrics are deep and spiritual, with a pessimistic world view. Translating them and trying to tease out their inner meaning is somewhat… filling. And now I feel like I’m turning into some sort of weird youkai… v_v

As a side note, the title uses the kanji 惡 (aku, ‘evil’), which is the old form of the kanji 悪 (aku, ‘evil’). I don’t think there’s a real difference in meaning between the two, though the first one looks a bit ‘cooler,’ so to speak…

Somebody asked a question once, about the difference between good and evil –
I’m not looking for the answer.
Scandal and reputation are blended together, and a shallow ‘virtue’ is handed down.
Such is the state of this world.

I’ve been a bit bored with the world lately.
If no-one’s gonna do it, then I’ll do it!
Hah! My sword’s strokes bear the name of justice.

Those who are lost, and those who aren’t worth duping…
I’ll brush them aside, all at once, like countless flowers.
I’ll do it so their hearts won’t be clouded over – they’ll never be aware of it.
I throw my scabbard away. With this body alone, I make my way to the name of ‘Justice.’

This world is infested by petals of good and evil mixed together,
Though they’re identical to rubbish on the side of the road… (One, two, three, four)
Ahh, don’t you think
That the human world is a dreadfully difficult place to live in?
I find myself just wanting to breathe clean air…

They pretend to have a virtuous mind, with their paper mache signs of comprehension.
After all, dealing a crushing blow would be such a sloppy thing to do…

All those people, with their doubts, have strayed from the path.
Thou shalt not hold doubts – that is correct justice.
I am separated from my alertness, as my body receives this feeling of bareness.
Buddha’s face is reflected upon my blade…

They say when you love someone, you become stronger…
They say that believing in other people is a form of strength, too…
But I wonder, why do you protect other people?
I ask my blade, reflected before me.
They say that humans tell lies without remorse.

All of those people who thoughtlessly talk and lie to others…
And the masses, who are made to dance through phrases such as:
“Put your trust in others, and they will never betray you or harm you.”
Hah! Those kinds of people… are rust on my blade!

Thus, I defeat evil, and raise the severed head of virtue.
True benevolence is beckoning all to Nirvana.
With the greatest devotion,
I kill my beloved.
The evil of the world was reflected on my drawn sword.
So, too, was my face

(1) This sentence uses the traditional Japanese phrase ‘kiri sute gomen,’ which literally means ‘to cut and leave.’ Basically, samurai in the olden days had the right to cut and leave commoners who offended them. This one just adds the word ‘mayoi’ in front of it, which I assume refers to Youmu’s state of mind.

(2) This sentence is a type of wordplay. ‘Zan’ (an onomatopoeia resembling a hard slash) is spelled out with kanji (chinese characters) that have the same reading. Interestingly, when one takes the individual meanings of the kanji into account, the sentence becomes something like ‘Leftovers! Mountain! Behead! Disaster! Regret!

A nice, autumn-flavoured track from Doppel. As a side note, the French terms are in the original Japanese lyrics, so I left them as they are to keep the ‘exotic’ flavour.
