The title of this song is based on a proverb: 馬の骨 (uma no hone). It’s a derogatory term used to talk about someone whose origins are a bit shady. The idea behind the proverb is “the bones of a horse are useless and too large to dispose of. In the same way, this person is useless.”

The title of this song, however, replaces の with と. I think this changes the meaning just a little – the speaker might be the ‘horse’, and the person they’re talking about might be the ‘bone.’ The ‘bone’ is useless to them, but it’s hard to throw them away because they’re such a large part of their life.

I first tried translating this track about 2 and a half years ago. I got as far as the first stanza and gave up, so I’m glad I was able to pick it up again and have another look at it. When I read these lyrics, I think about someone living an unhappy life in an apartment.

Original Theme: –The Maid and the Pocket Watch of Blood [メイドと血の懐中時計]

This song actually has a really clever title. When written as 冥土の土産, it’s a set phrase meaning ‘a good memory [to take with you when you go to the afterlife],’ but when written as メイドの土産, it means ‘the maid’s souvenir/present.’ I ultimately went with the first one because I thought that was more appropriate for the lyrics, but the second one is also a valid title since the title is written in katakana. Honestly, it’s rare to find titles that are that clever.

Original theme: Flawless Clothing of the Celestials [天衣無縫]

And here we are, at the last track of the album. Lyrics-wise, I’d say this is probably the pinnacle of the entire album. Beautiful images, references to ancient mythology… this track has it all. As a whole, it seems like this song dually refers to Tenshi’s journey through the aurora as well as traditional purification rituals known as ‘misogi’ (禊) and ‘ooharai’ (大祓).

If I added in translation notes for every single reference, I’d probably end up with over 10 notes, which is a bit too many! Instead, I decided to focus on the main points, like the names of deities and stuff like that. And as a final note, the role of the speaker appears to alternate between God and Tenshi.

_ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _

In a world that had lost its prayers, there were people who had been entrusted with them.
A blade smouldered inside the aurora. The one who had not yet grasped it stood still, without calling upon it.
(I am the eye. I am the heart. I knew that here it was not yet so.)

The child who fell from the heavens became a cornerstone – a halo, who was inspired to set off.
I wonder who wished for it. Nobody will ever know…

O, multitude of spirits, who soar through the sky… (in a dry vessel)
A blade pierces through those overcast words.
Yes, I heard that this place was paradise.
Everything is as the will of the Lord decrees. (Come, sing!)

Under the divine protection of the wind, which causes the greenery to bud, that sword of someday has finished rusting.
(Still, the wind blows, for the sake of carrying the life of the flowers.)
O, to be bound by the thread of Shangri-la!
Now, I yearn for the weight of the sky in this place, as it grows dark.
(Until that day, this sky grows dark.)

(Purify my soul! Cleanse my soul! This body, this voice – purify them!
Such a beautiful, sorrowful voice. I wonder what is reflected in those eyes…)

Without completely casting away her nostalgia, the maiden made her way towards that vast land,
Just as if she was recalling those days of yore.

That vast land sighs. It echoes through the rivers. Aah, the murmuring of the silent ocean…
(The beauty of that melody withered and faded. The Puranas shine faintly; they have not yet faded.) (1)
The prayers become flames, and race through the mountain.

As the voices of people seeking salvation echoed eternally through the fire bell,
(Not yet forgotten, inside the heart, for eternity.)
A scarlet blade was in the hands of that maiden, who walked upon a path contrary to the tailwind.
(Exchanged into life. Nobody can be allowed to die yet.)

The morning fog, the evening fog: they become a large boat, facing the storm.
O, release it! O, release it! I am all.

The aurora is steeped in scarlet. That maiden’s ‘id’ is that which shines.
Perhaps it guides the backward path…
I, who am surrounded by mist, am the eye. I think of Mother Earth.
(Yet, I myself am present in the world—)

The wind carries the smell of ivy, and the sounds of the spirit-scattering sword when it is swung.
But from the grieving Dia flows the Mana of forgotten life. (2)
(Love, and voices, and this song, are still beloved.)
My feelings of nostalgia grow stronger, aimed towards my birthplace at the furthest ends.
(The wind and the earth are living…)
Today, she shall continue to sing. The maiden’s hopes become nourishment – they shall save all.
(A downpour. Aah, save everything!)

The morning haze, the evening haze: o, please save everything!
Riding upon Odr, as the clouds fall, the shrine maiden of the heavens shall save all creation! (3)

_ _ _ _ _

(1) The ‘Puranas’ are ancient Hindu texts, written in Sanskrit. The word ‘Purana’ by itself means ‘old.’
(2) Dia is most likely a reference to the Roman goddess of the fields and the earth. She is represented in the lyrics as ‘大地’ (‘daichi’ – earth). Mana, written as 水 (‘mizu’ – water) in the lyrics, generally refers to the power of nature’s elemental forces.
(3) Odr is a Norse god, and he’s the husband of Freya. Apart from that, he’s relatively unknown and he’s presented as a passive figure.

More Shinra-Bansho. And more of Azuki’s awesome lyrics. Having translated a few of their tracks, I’m starting to see some patterns and recurring phrases emerging in the lyrics. One such phrase is ‘The theory of happiness’ (幸福論 – ‘koufukuron’), which refers to the writings of philosophers such as Carl Hilty. As you can probably tell, these books deal with happiness – what it is and how to achieve it. I get the feeling that the search for happiness is one of the main themes of Shinra-Bansho. Or, at least, I feel like it comes through very strongly in this album.

_ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _

That pipeline, soaring above the Millennial Village,
Is just like no-man’s-land – there’s no returning from it.
Though the time after you lost your way may not be ideal,
We won’t let you regret it! (Welcome!)
You’ll become happy, right?

Next to those tea utensils, which you chose with such care,
A sweet dream of fascination shall unfold, as you’re hit by the acid rain.

This is the paradise you searched for – welcome! Come in! (1)
Because there aren’t any wicked cats here anymore…
Drink! Make merry! Embrace! Go mad!
Bid farewell to that boring world of the present,
And aim for the world of a dream you cannot awaken from.

You stick out your wagging tongue, and demand more and more.
You’re not satisfied? That’s perfect!
Though the first time is chance, and the second time is fate,
The third time onwards is out of the question! (The riffraff – they’re at a loss!) (2)
But, I’ll show you even more of the depths of lust…

“Show me the face of the liar – the one who said they got lost!”
I coax in a wheedling voice, wagging my upside-down tail…

Aah, the theory of happiness that comes from yearning for someone… you had a good dream, didn’t you?
From the happiness that rains down…
You struggle. You’re snatched away. You cry. You’re thrown away.
Those that pass through this door have hopes.
This never-ending feast continues…

Though I may never meet you,
Who smiled at that time, again,
I cling to your legs. I won’t forget you ever again!
If you’re dreaming, what if I made it just my own world?

You reached the limits of paradise – you’re being scattered about by everyone, right?
It’s like having your hair pulled from behind…
Cling! Breathe! Go mad! You can’t stop them.
I wonder what happiness is? I continue to wonder.
In this vague, decadent dream,
Those joined-up red neon lights dance around.

Aah, all that’s left in the end is the theory of happiness.
Its virtue is left as it stands…

_ _ _ _ _

(1) The word ‘paradise’ (桃源郷 – ‘tougenkyou’) used here is a generic reference to Arcady/Shangri-La/Eden.
(2)
This is a corruption of the phrase ‘The first time is chance, the second time is a miracle, and the third time is fate.’ (一度目は偶然、二度目は奇跡、三度目は運命)

Original Theme: Tomorrow Will Be Special, Yesterday Was Not [明日ハレの日、ケの昨日]

I struggled away at this for about 2 months, and the end result still doesn’t make sense… I wondered why the lyrics of this track were so different to the other lyrics from this album – and then I found out that Kaztora wrote them, instead of Azuki.

But yeah, this track is like some sort of children’s song. The narrative seems to be a slightly corrupted version of the regular version – this time, it’s told from the frogs’ point of view. There are heaps of references to traditional Japanese children’s games and songs, including ‘Kagome, Kagome.’ I wanted to point out all of them, but then the translation notes would have ended up being longer than the lyrics themselves… Anyway, enjoy it! Try and make up your own story about what’s going on. I don’t think there’s a right or wrong answer.

_ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _

Who’s the one being mean to me? Who might you be?
The chained one who fell, fell down… was that you?
It’s the handicap you were born with. You chickened out,
And you were choked by all those souls…
Who’s the first star in the evening? Who might that be?
It sways to and fro in space… is that me?
All of the people living everywhere,
They’ve all bloomed, you know! That’s right! That’s right!

The moon swelled up, unknown to all. “Who might that child and that child be?”
It’s missing a chunk, so… “We don’t know which child you mean…”
It cried “Let’s go home…!” and after that –
We’re so upset we won! Hana ichi monme. (1)

Your pinky and my pinky:
Come, let’s link and unlink them, now!
Before the gate to the shrine, I wonder what you might have hidden?

There’s no such thing as paradise,
There is no paradise, there is a paradise… that’s a lie!
It’s God’s parade! Even if you shake it off,
Continue down the road, down the road, to the fortress.

Wow! You troublesome child! Come towards the sound of my clapping…
That beautiful lady certainly didn’t call to you.
We can’t offer an appetiser, and we can’t let you pass!
Envy it! Swallow it! 1000 needles down the hatch… (2)

Mr. Demon, come this way!
He won’t let a single hair of you escape!
And if you were blindfolded,
Round things and boundaries would be all jumbled up!

Let’s go! Let’s go! To that mountain…
You and your mum and your dad were all laughing.
It bloomed! That something… And that’s – hip hip hooray!
Somewhere, everywhere, everyone’s going crazy!
A white, a white, a white snake came and,
A red, a red, a red frog was dancing.
The bubble, the bubble, the bubble broke open.
(‘Round and ‘round and ‘round we go!)
Let’s go! You too! To the place where you bloomed.
A white, a red, a broken ball’s origin.

Come now! I’ll borrow your hand,
We’re clapping – let’s all pray together!
Though it rises up, it goes back to the beginning.
This opposite feast is starting, you know!
When you bloom with enthusiasm, you’ll have to go.
(Life, too, goes ‘round and ‘round and ‘round)
But when, oh when will it come out?
(Mixing, mixed, mixed up – come now, farewell!)
When you bloom with enthusiasm, let’s go! Look out!
(A red, a red, a red frog dances)
So we won’t be discovered…
Come along – to Lord Tenjin’s knee!

It’s some kinda kinda procession of the gods…
I’m kinda kinda sticking out…
It’s some kinda kinda procession of the gods…
We’re kinda kinda mixed together…
It’s some kinda kinda procession of the gods…
I’m kinda kinda sticking out…
It’s some kinda party at the procession of the gods…
We’re kinda kinda mixed together…

_ _ _ _ _

(1) ‘Hana ichi monme’ is a Japanese game similar to a game called Red Rover. Apparently it translates to ‘a flower is one monme.’ A monme is a type of coin, used as a measure of weight.
(2) This little section uses ‘tousenbou’ as a springboard to a series of puns based on similar words: ‘senbou,’ and ‘senbon.’ I made a note of it because it’s quite cool, and quite untranslatable…

This is my favourite track from this album – scratch that, it’s my favourite Liz Triangle song. Like I keep saying, I really enjoy azuki’s lyrics, and these are no exception. Since the source theme is ‘Blue Sea of 53 Minutes,’ we can assume it deals with the Renko x Merry story.

_ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _

I am struck by a rain of words, and without putting up my umbrella, I start to sink
To the bottom of the sea I struggle on towards. This whole world is a lie, and
Everything is here, in this place. I overcome that false vision, ah…

The hands of that girl, who I met for the first time, were very warm.
In this world that is full of lies, they were real.

At the edge of a world of just ones and zeros, you and I, who had met by chance,
Piled up a texture of lies and falsified
The solution of this unending voyage.
I wonder if even the door we will someday reach will not welcome us.
Only my right hand, which certainly feels your warmth, is passed down…

Tomorrow is a thing of the future.
Even without understanding, it’s obvious. God doesn’t exist.
They’re not here. They’re not anywhere.
The sky I looked up at became cloudy,
And I heard a voice: “This is paradise.”
What is happiness? I don’t know…

The rust-eaten hands of that girl were, in some respects, unrefined.
I aimed for a world that would accept everything.

At the edge of a world of just ones and zeros, you and I, who had parted,
Had been taught everything by a God who went and disappeared, sinking in an ocean of electrons.
My outstretched hand did not graze against anything, and the world closed its eyes.
I was the one left behind. As it is, I laugh all by myself – I am junk.

Ah… I am gazing at a world that crumbles away from my feet.
Even this vague scenery sinks into the ocean…

At the edge of a world of just ones and zeros, you and I, who had met by chance,
Understood that the tremors of the world were spreading,
And we took each others hands.
I wonder if the door to the world of electrons will never open again.
The things that were left behind are
A purposeless key to the future, and
Just my right hand, which cannot forget the warmth it felt…

When Azuki’s in charge, you know the lyrics are going to have some powerful images – this track is no exception. I won’t give too much of it away; I’d say the speaker is most likely Seija, but I’ll leave the rest of the details to your imagination… [The album title should really be ‘lagrange point,’ but whatever.]

_ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _

The lengthening shadows are lonely – nothing can be touched by those hands.
The ones in this landscape are myself, the shadows, and that honest person –
A villager who would shut their window even in an ordinary world.
I fear wolves. Perhaps, in the same way, I fear that young boy, as well.

They bear no malice towards the pebble they tripped over.
The one over there is indifferent, worrying about nobody.

Aah, I break off a single, beautiful Suzuran.
I believe now, too, in the reality of a heart eaten away
By fake wiles.

In this fickle world, too, changes are born before you know it.
Floating things seem to sink, and sunken things seem to float –
Like this, lies are smeared with ash, and only the hands of the clock are correct.
They carve away at me.

Aah, because everything is here,
I sneer, together with the garbage. My heart still seeks equilibrium.
My screams shake off my doubts and delusions.
There is no longer anyone who will listen to the words
I have spat out at length. That, I believe.

I do not regret it. However, if I could go back in time,
I want to return to that time, but without an underlying motive attached.
I do not want to attach it…

Aah, I shall accept everything!
I shall cast away my honour and my shame, and reverse the hands of that broken clock.
I believe they will turn…
Someday, the wolf must eat up the villager who does not believe in it.
Until that day, I shall sleep. Perhaps I should wish
The tranquility brought about by mixing rules and order together
Upon the world…

I think it’s a bit ironic that we have a dark track about Orin on the same album as ‘Doppel,’ in which Orin played a big part in helping Satori pick herself up and move forward. But whatever…

Anyway, this track is dark. The star is Orin, the cheerful ‘waste-picker’ who lives in the abandoned hell. She compares herself to the corpses she picks up and plays around with, for living alone in this grey world is the same as being dead. Like some other Shinra-Bansho tracks, there’s a gratuitous use of English in the chorus sections – I tried to stay a bit closer to the original this time, but there are areas where I had to interpret it a little.

Also, as I’m sure a lot people know already, John Doe and Jane Doe are names used for people whose identities are unknown. It’s also apparently used when referring to the identities of the deceased before they have been formally identified. I treat them as both ‘generic’ nouns and names, which leads to phrases such as “You’re a smiling John Doe.” [type 1 – ‘generic’ noun] and “I’m tired of playing alone, John Doe!” [type 2 – name]

The path ahead is full of people with their heads hung in shame…
Let’s light this dark world up, just a little. Look!

Tonight, I’ll play around with your heart – tip tap!
Answer me, tell me! I seek the unknown. (1)
I’m tired of playing alone, John Doe!
I’m a cheerful waste picker…

You’re scared of having nobody there to care for you, and you’re scared of rotting away…
My claws lit up with flames. You’re a smiling John Doe.
Should we have a dream? Only my dreams, though, forever…

Nobody visits the dark depths of the earth spirits anymore…
Like me, the sky was sparkling dark grey.
It’s just like being dead.

You’re running away from me, but together we dance, dance!
I just want your still body, to give it a kiss, kiss!
I’m tired of playing alone, Jane Doe!
I’m a gallant embalmer…

You were still more scared of death than living a meaningless life…
I dug up your prized possessions. You’re a smiling Jane Doe.

Aah, I don’t want to be alone… I can’t live alone!
In the depths of the earth spirits, void of people, I shut my heart.

I dance by myself, a splendid tap dance! (2)
I smile by myself, a cute smile, smile!
I’m good at playing by myself, Jane Doe!
By myself, I’m lonely…

However, viewing the past with nostalgia is just gathering up waste.
I’m intoxicated with beauty. My partner for the day is Jone Doe.
Still, looking back on the past is leaving happiness behind.
I put on a show of having no heart. My grinning self, too, is Jane Doe!
I smile coldly, and dance, dance, and dance.
My grinning self – Jane Doe.

(1) Original is ‘non know,’ = ‘not known’ = ‘unknown]
(2) Original is ‘tip dance.’ I assume they meant ‘tap dance.’

To be honest, I tried to translate the ‘Parade Version’ of this song first, since I like it more, but this one is easier to make sense of, so I translated this one first. The second-last stanza is complicated, mainly because of the frog puns. They’re ribbit-ing. It plays on the verb ‘kaeru’ 帰る (to return home) and ‘kaeru’ 蛙 (frog), and even ‘kaeru’ 変える (to change/transform). Of course, at certain points, it’s spelled as the neutral ‘kaeru’ カエル, making it hard to tell which is which. I don’t think there’s an equivalent pun in English, so I couldn’t bring those nuances across… Unless I went with something like ‘hop along home…’

The ‘gate’ refers to a ‘torii,’ a special gate found before a shrine. They’re those red things. If you don’t know what they are, just do an image search. Also, ‘naku’ 鳴く (to cry) refers to the cries of animals, such as frogs. So keep that in mind. Finally, like usual, pronouns aren’t included in the original Japanese, so I put them in on a case-by-case basis.

A voice cried in the street at night – I wonder whose it was?

That child, racing around in the mountain,
Came to life unaware, unaware, of fear and horror.
But as they made their way through the archway, the cries of the cicadas
Vanished, whilst they were unaware…

Those frogs, unknown to humans, were crying:
“All together now!” They were making quite a stir.
“Let’s go home. Let’s go home!” You thought, as your hair stood on end…

Your pinky and my pinky,
Come! Let’s link and unlink them, now!
This is the hidden village that lies beyond the archway.
What are you doing? Let’s play!

I skip a stone across the water, towards the other shore,
It bounces countless times, countless times. Did it make it there?
I become serious, and start competing, but then I realised
I was all by myself, gripping a stone in my hand…

Now, everyone, form an even circle – you’re it!
Cover your eyes with your hands…
“Kagome, kagome!” Follow my clapping.

Mr. Demon, come this way!
Let’s lead you back home, now.
No peeping! Come this way, please come this way.

(Whose cries were those? Whose cries were those?)

Sunset, twilight, dusk. (Hidden to all… With someone unknown…)
Come! Let’s head home (Head home… No, to the forest…)
Let’s get you home! Let’s get you home!
The ravens were crying… (Head home to the river… Head home to the water…)
But before everything doesn’t disappear,
Let’s play together, one last time! (Frogs cover the ground…)
A once-in-a-lifetime game of tag.
Run away! Run away! Come this way…

Life is brief… I wonder who those red shoes belong to? Hm…
Before we catch you, please return home!
Tales starting with ‘once upon a time’
Are worthless, I say! Please, forget those things…
The laughter rode upon the wind and vanished, with a ‘whoosh…’
