Like all of azuki’s lyrics, this song is wonderful and thought-provoking, but you could spend forever reading it over and trying to work out what’s going on… It seems to be about Miko and one of her retainers, but is it about Futo or Tojiko? I’ll leave that up to you…

As a whole, this story alludes to Zhuangzi’s butterfly dream, the traditional tale in which a man ponders whether he dreams that he is a butterfly, or whether he’s a butterfly dreaming that he’s a human.

Also, all of the “you’s” use the feminine form 貴女.

I’ll tell you a nostalgic story. It’s about a dream I once had, like that tale about the butterfly…
I believed that my days would continue as they were.
You were there, I was there, and the world kept turning.
It was an indescribable world.
I secretly strained my ears from beside you. You were so sombre.

I tried to take a closer look… I was smiling.
I wanted to be like you
And I left myself behind in my past days,
Which vanished somewhere.

That’s right—an unhappy future will never arrive
Because the only one who’s ever hurt is me, as I am now.
“One day.” I don’t need to predict what will happen after that
Because I’m fine with just being able to say “good morning” when I wake up.

Now, I’ll tell you a mysterious story. I’ve become a butterfly.
I must have had 1000 different thoughts
But I didn’t tell anyone a single one. You know, I couldn’t even be myself.

This world, seen from your eyes,
Is so colourful.
I let out a sigh
Aimed at that rainbow-covered heart. Then, like a bubble
It flew, flew, flew… and vanished.

“God is unfair.” That’s not how it is at all—
I think we’re just a little bit unequal.
It was too early for me to wake up.

That’s right—an uncertain future will never arrive
Because, back then, you were the one who believed. You were optimistic.
I don’t need anyone else. Nobody else can take your place.
Even if only you can smile, the world will turn.

Rather than honorific language, I only want to listen to your words.

That’s right—an unhappy future will never arrive
Because for a thousand nights and dawns, you (I) will be there. (1)

(1) 貴女 【わたし】 (anata [watashi], you [I]) is written, but わたし (I) is sung.

This is one of the two new tracks featured in the album. I say this all the time, but I really love the tone of Ayo’s voice!

Some tweets from the lyricist (1, 2) suggest several things about the content of the song. Firstly, the song is told from Dr. Latency’s (Merry’s) perspective. Secondly, it deals with the concept of a world of ‘what-ifs.’ The quotation marks (「 」) are also intended to not be read as part of the title. Instead, the quotation marks are filled with different words depending on the person reading the lyrics. The translation of the title was influenced by this observation.

Also, many thanks to 空見りんき for valuable translation + interpretation-related advice!

Something was running toward the corner of the school.
It must have been a cat, right?
I might have been mistaken.
I continued to gaze upon the world.

During a sweaty afternoon, we shared a snow cone.
We got tanned and did it all over again. This was someone’s summer.
I swam, drawing nearer and further away from you.
I dissolved within my consciousness.

I couldn’t reach either a first or sixth grade star
But I took the autumn leaves around me in my hand.
Someday, anyway,
I’ll seize those stars!

Ah… the paper plane lightly flew,
Carrying the words written on it into the distance.
I look at the world and smile.
From now on, ”    ”

The snowscape began to dissolve
And the scent of love mixed with the cherry blossoms.
The ornament in my hair sways. I’m going
To meet someone, and my feelings grow faster…

Dreams and hopes begun in secret
(Are sad and lonesome, so)
Someday, tell me about them!
Let’s photograph everything! Let’s smile, always!
(Heading toward fun and happiness)
Let’s walk, step by step.

A paper plane is in my pocket.
Yes, even if it’s just a soggy list of letters
It’s the world that I saw with you.
But it won’t fly with just that alone.
It’s not enough yet.
Ah…

From now on, together with you,
Let’s dream up my story!
With smiles on both our faces… look!

Now, let’s join hands and step forth!
If we’re together, it will surely come into view.
Our tale this time must be about another different world!

Ah… rockets racing through the sky
And completed autobiographies are the same—
We didn’t need any of them all along.
We start walking, ”   “.

lalala…

Even if there’s nothing there,
We’ll leave behind two sets of footprints
Always, always…

Some early Shinra-bansho, for a change of pace. I never ended up translating much from this album, but I would still like to translate whichever songs haven’t been translated yet, and I’d love to translate the title track someday.

This one feels so calm. Azuki’s lyrics are wonderful like always, and Mie sounds really different to how she usually sounds. She’s quite versatile!

By the way, this is totally not related to the well-known Pocahontas song of the same name. At least, not from what I can see…

In April, the cherry blossoms of parting bloom.
In May, the rain is cold.
The June bride flies in the sky after the rain.
July brings warm winds
And August brings heat, but one must endure it.
In September, the post-full moon floats in the sky. (1)

Even my multi-world interpretation (interpretation)
Stands no chance against fashionable clothes.

As the seasons pass,
The shrine is decked out in pastel colours.
Today is the birthday of the god
That watches over it.

December brings a blanket of snow
And in January, even the springs freeze.
The demons of February, left behind, run away.

Myself, humanism, and love letters— (love letters)
Even if you mix them together, they’ll come apart again.

I change the channels on the TV.
The radio is noisy. The weather report predicts rain.
Today, I’ll go shopping with God.
They’re not special at all.

The UV rays run wild
And the teru teru bozu is upside-down. (2)
The showers will clear, at least in some places.
It’s God’s birthday party.

Yes, when I fly in the sky, I can be free.
I can be myself, someone for me alone.
(If my wishes, my prayers arrive, then you could call it a miracle.)

The days pass
And hopes and dreams check in and out of hospital.
The homeless child isn’t here anymore
And God isn’t here, either.

The torii is ruined beyond repair. (3)
Coins are leaping. The rain of farewells falls.
Even if I’m begged at in that tone,
A miracle won’t happen.
“Ready? Not yet!”
I play hide-and-seek by myself.
Today is God’s birthday—
They shouldn’t even exist.
(Swaying in the wind)
Fly…!
(The seasons pass.)
Fly…!
(La la la… la la la la)
Fly…!
(La la la… la la la la)

(1) 十六夜月 (izayoidzuki) literally means ‘sixteen-day-old moon.’ It takes place the night after the full moon.
(2) The teru teru bozu (てるてる坊主) is a small doll made of cloth or paper that is often hung outside to keep rainy days away.
(3) A torii (鳥居) is a traditional gate often found at the entrance to a Shinto shrine.

This is such a fun track! In this album, we’ve got not one, but two duets between Ayaponzu* and Ayo (Shinra-bansho’s two official vocalists). I really like both tracks, and I’m looking forward to hearing some more duets in the future!

I think the story goes something like this: Flandre and Remilia terrorise and kill one of their ‘guests,’ then they start fighting, then they make up. In the end, they realise that they’re not as different as they seem. But have they really put aside their differences…?

There are several spell card references in here. In particular, ‘Five of a Kind’ is a direct reference to the album art, in which Remilia is the ‘fifth,’ accompanying the 4 Flandres. I think they’re the ‘mischievous sensation’ referred to in the album’s title.

Code Purple: Both. Red: Remilia [Ayaponzu*]. Orange: Flandre [Ayo]

Vamp, scarlet devil! Who are you?
Jump, scarlet devil! Are you ready?
I’ll suck everything from your soul!
Making mischief every night!

(I want you tonight. I can’t help it—it’s a party night!
I’ll instruct you, brainwash you, serve you… on and on and on!)

I am this mansion’s owner, its scarlet moon. (A splendid red moon!)
Welcome! Sit down, don’t tense up. Now…

It’s my turn!
Humans are my favourite things! (Just kidding) I’m an angel, the pride of my big sis (Yeah!)
Let’s hurry up and play! Let’s do something and spend time together!
(How fun!) I’m so happy! I can’t wait! (Ehehehe)

Do you like playing vampire tag?
O demon, come this way! (La la la…)
I’m fine with anything (That’s right, I am!)
Hm? A guest…?

I wanna play kagome kagome! (Huh?)
You’re gonna be in the cage, right? (Hold on!)
Wait! Aah, aah, aah, aah, aah!
I’ll move quickly, squeeze you tight, then bam! Let’s go!

We’ll tangle up your fate
And the secret art of us sisters, “Five of a Kind,” will sparkle!
There’s no way you can escape!
It’s your fault for getting lost and ending up here!
When we turn on the lights,
We’ll show you everything. I wanna play with your cards.
Be our playmate!
Today we definitely won’t let you go home!

Vamp, scarlet devil! Where are you?
Jump, scarlet devil! Are you breathing?
I’ll drink everything up. Come!
What a mess! You’re coming apart!

Oh no! They’re not moving anymore… (Eh?)
I’m gonna tell the teacher! (Keine…?)
After all, it was you, sis, who dropped them from such a high place. (Ah…)
(Now I’m in a mood!)

Hold it!
It’s because you pushed them (I dunno)
With some demonically high firepower, right? (I can’t hear you!)
You’re always so unreasonable. Are you really my little sister?

What?!
Ah, it’s always like this! I’m in the wrong?! (Lu la la…)
I’ve put up with it up until today.
You’ve put up with it?

How outrageous! It’s nothing but lies! (Agh… that’s it…)
I’m the one who’s been patient here!
Agh… that’s it! That’s it, that’s it, that’s it, that’s it, that’s it!
I flare up, scream, and then bam!
I don’t care!

I don’t like any of it!
Aah, sis, I didn’t do anything wrong!
Think about what you’ve done.
Who was the one complaining all day?
How cheeky. You’re so lame!
Don’t forget—you were oh so terrified!
Don’t change the subject!
I definitely won’t forgive you today! I hate you, I hate you, I hate you, I hate you!

“Hah, you can’t do anything if Sakuya’s not around!”
“That goes for you too, right, Flan?!”
“You say ‘charisma is this and that,’ but… do you even know what you’re saying?!”
“You’ve… only got strength behind you! You beastly girl!”
“What?!” “Huh?!”

I really, really hate you!
(Yeah, yeah, yeah…) 1, 2, 3, 4!
Day by day, you never get tired.
(You’ve gotta have fun every night! I need to be an adult? Why, why, why?)
You have ‘fun’ without tiring from all our arguments.
(We’ve all gotta use out time well, so we do the same things each day)
Wanna play? (Yeah, yeah) Wanna play? (Yeah, yeah) Let’s play! (Yeah, yeah)
Bad, bad, bad, bad behaviour—Your stupidity will never be fixed.
If we’re both idiots, then let’s dance! Let’s have fun together or we’ll miss out…

We’ll do the same things today! Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah!

Let’s make up.
But hey, I didn’t do anything wrong!
We’re not the same.
I hate you so much I don’t even want to see your face.
You’re so dear to me!
…Really? Because you know, I really…
Well, only when you’re my playmate.
Just as I thought.  We’re the same! Cranberry…!

(Vamp, scarlet devil! Piece of cake. Shine!)
The secret art of sisters, “Five of a Kind,” glistens and sparkles.
(R.I.P, scarlet devil! 2 x 2 = 4. Yeah! La la la…)
Shouldn’t we all play together? La la la…
(Out! Safe! Cross flash!)
Those things won’t have any effect, right? Right? Right!
Fate can’t be changed.
You’re the one who can’t continue, most of all! You can’t!

I love the whole album, but this track is one of two that hold a particularly special place in my heart.

Interestingly enough, ticat started off as a Liz Triangle/Shinra-bansho fan, and now they’re writing lyrics for the circle…! According to one of their tweets, lapis lazuli is intended to signify an eternal oath.

This is more of a general note, but three different characters are used for ‘blue’ in each of this song’s choruses: 蒼, 碧, and 青 respectively. This translation uses different words in an attempt to convey the different nuances held by these characters.

[I’m going to leave the album title untranslated until I actually translate the title track, because I don’t want to go with one translation and have to change it partway through]

I planted my splendid knife in
And I gently kissed you, like I was caressing your ripe cheek.

I wipe off the dripping juice
And think back over the past.

I had forgotten to wind the screw.
My body sways to and fro. The music box plays.

The moon, which had turned 360 degrees, and the lake’s rippling surface
Shone with a freezing coldness.
Their radiance was like chunks of lapis lazuli shining through the fog
Into the deep blue, into the distance.
I looked at the new moon, quenching my heart.
If only I could have sworn that oath…

I touch the tears of the Earth as they overflow.
Next, I will fill my lungs with them.

“Ever since that day, my broken silver fangs have—“
I should stop telling those old tales.

Even if the deal is weak,
I won’t worry about it and I’ll soar high for that fleeting moment.

The moon, which had revolved a full 360 degrees, danced above the lake.
The lake awaited the thaw, seeking warmth.
It was like chunks of lapis lazuli, fading away
Into the jade, into the distance.
I would scream until I could scream no more
If it meant I could swear that oath.

I stand alone during a dark night
In a corner of a terminal station.
I left behind my expectations and my hope
And I closed the door. Hey…

I see. Since the days when I served you, I’ve been fascinated
By the fireworks in the sky I picture in my heart. I long for them.
I knew it all. But I can’t count 100 lights.
“I want to be by your side for even longer…”

The moon, turning 360 degrees, passed by
And erased the thick clouds of mist.
Still, the future is lapis lazuli coloured,
So blue, so close by.
After seizing the future in my hands so it won’t spill out,
I can swear this oath forever…

So, this track is from one of 4 event-limited singles released by Shinra-bansho over the past 8 months or so. Kaztora promised on Twitter that all of them will be remixed and released as part of a future album, so don’t worry! I transcribed the lyrics from a very blurry photo uploaded by someone seeking to sell this single online. I managed to get everything apart from about 5 complex kanji, so consider this a draft translation until the track is re-released and I’m able to look at a proper lyrics sheet.

I always say that kaztora’s lyrics are spicy, which makes this track really weird (in a good way). It combines a ‘sweet’ subject [unrequited love] with kaztora’s spicy lyrical style. It’s weird, but compelling at the same time.

Also, I think 〇×△□ is meant to be someone’s name, except the speaker has censored it out. If you have any other ideas, let me know! Also, if you were able to actually get a copy of the single, let me know so I can be jealous (^_^;)

_ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _

Swaying melancholically, I gave a single sigh.
I feigned ignorance and acted like I didn’t love you anymore. Hah…

I can’t be true to myself. I hide my feelings
Beneath the tower of words I piled up,
In my books, I’m a (brave!) protagonist
And my devotion stands out in my secret world.
La la la… we’ll be together forever.

Every day, I just do the same boring things over again.
Why can’t I see you? It’s like my habits resent my destiny.

I can’t stop my romantic feelings.
Ah… I gaze at the sky beneath the books I know all too well.
My heart beats so fast I can’t control it!
I want to know how you’d greet me, right now!

That’s right—〇×△□, I’m crazy about you!
This triangle was formed from diagonal lines. Oh, to love and be loved. Next, next, next!
My feelings grow stronger. I’ve never experienced this before!
Show me a world that I know nothing about
Please, okay? Ah…

Stop annoying me! How mean… you’re in my way!
Why, why, why? I can’t stand it!
“Come and see me!” My hopes just grow stronger.

I want to tell you how I really feel,
But though I want to say those words, I can’t. I’m in limbo.
My heart’s so irritating, but what can I do?
I want you
To teach me some forbidden things…

That’s right—every day of the week, I’m crazy about you! (1)
Weekends are the same: I just keep looking up at the sky.
I want you to tell me the secrets of Agastya.
Hey, I don’t mind if you look
Even further inside me…

In light that seems to burst and come together,
It looks like my mischievous magic is scalding.
I’ve never felt this way before!
Before I return to zero, call my name.
If you leave me like this, I’ll get all weird!

And today, too—〇×△□, I’m crazy about you!
This right angle was formed from diagonal lines. I pine for you. Next, next, next!
My permanent thoughts are inside this ubiquitous box.
But why? You and I
Fly upon this comet. We head far away…

〇×△□, I’m crazy about you!

It’s been a while since I last translated some of azuki’s lyrics. It serves as a reminder of just how good he is at what he does! They just flow so well.

This is an important note, too – the speaker uses the feminine pronoun ‘atashi’ (あたし). Also, the person they are talking about is referred to as ‘anata’ (貴女) in its feminine form.

_ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _

Your red eyes are mirrors in which my weak self is reflected.
I longed for them because they were special, because they were different. Ah…

I was a bit too late to notice our trivial misunderstandings.
You left me behind and went away. You vanished with a smile. Ah…

Poets tell lies, saying that partings are sudden,
But meetings are still precious. Let’s meet again someday!

Your red eyes are mirrors in which my weak self is reflected.
Nobody is here, within eternity.

Ah, I hope that you will be there for me, reflected in my eyes,
Just like I was there, reflected in yours. Ah…

I lied to myself, saying that endless nights do not exist.
Even if it’s false, let’s meet again during that night. Ah…

For your sake
I will continue to sow seeds (I hope that tomorrow)
I will continue to water them (I will become)
And no matter how many years it takes… (A stronger person)
White flowers will humbly bloom.

Even as these hours draw to a close, I don’t want to let them end in an instant.
The more I wish for eternity, the more fleeting this world is.
You’re so lonely. I suppose you hate watching the moon by yourself…
I won’t say goodbye
So let’s meet again when these flowers bloom.

I really love this track. Before translating the lyrics, I expected them to be nostalgic and happy. But, well… read on and discover for yourself!

I’m pretty sure it’s about Utsuho and Satori, but see if you can spot references to other members of the Subterranean Animism crew.

_ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _

I was still a childish weakling, just a hatchling.
I was pitch-black, covered in soot.
I gazed up at the sky above, and it was so ugly.
It spread out, as far as I could see.

A red-haired cat ran above a boiling pot.
I played tag with them and was scolded.
We played hide and seek, draped in curtains.
Laughter was so distant…

Your eyes were a wavering aurora in the far distance.
The world, which seemed to sparkle, was so far away. I couldn’t reach it.

This is what the Goddess said: “Do you want to see the sky?
I will make it so you can soar high…”
I could see to the very ends of the world.
It was just as the Goddess said.

With this splendid power,
I’ll make you happy next time, for sure.
So nobody will blame you or get in your way,
I’ll destroy everything.
I’ll destroy the whole world.

“Why”

Suddenly, the aurora rusted away and vanished. The rain fell without end
Even though I grew so strong, even though I wanted you to smile…

I had the same third eye,
But I couldn’t see anything at all.
I’m so sorry.
My feathers are still soot-stained. I’m still weak.

I’m still a weakling, beneath the ugly sky.
I’m pitch black and covered in wounds.
What did I think about as I lived through each day?
I can’t remember anymore.
I don’t understand.

In the end, the aurora began to dissolve away. Everything vanished…
No matter how far I walk, I’ll never forget that day.

Subterranean rose.
Even the Goddess won’t reach this place.
I will become the sun
And I’ll build a rainbow, too.

The sky is right here.

Watch the official video on Youtube here!

Like usual, kaztora takes what sounds like a peppy pop song and gives it odd, profound lyrics that make you question the meaning of life.

Originally, I thought the title would be translated as something like ‘Good Fortune’s Egoist,’ but having had the chance to look through this song, it looks like Tewi’s happiness is the thing that’s being stressed here.

Overall, the song seems to take place at two levels – Tewi is an ordinary girl who just wants to be happier than everyone else, but she also appears to play the role of the fabled ‘rabbit of happiness.’ Like a rabbit, happiness is easy to spot but hard to catch, and it can hop away at any moment…

_ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _

“Ready… set…!” I wish I could spend my time smiling
But today, I just fussed over nothing again.
With a leap, leap, leap, I hopped away.
I guess everyone experiences it.
I just can’t stop
At simply soothing people!

You can’t just say where happiness is
Since it doesn’t have a shape of its own.
But being told this and that
From over there, from here… How bothersome!

For whom? For what?
The rabbit leaps, but nothing special happens
Because the world was created to be
And unconditional, unequal, and unfathomable place.

Perfect apathy won’t awaken democracy.
They’re just unaware of the essentials.

“1, 2, 3!” I wish I could spend my time smiling,
But reason and intelligence get in my way.
With a leap, leap, leap, I hopped away.
I should just forget
About all the stuff around me.
I’m a happy egoist, happier than anyone else!

Floating on top of a petri dish—
That’s happiness. It’s that sort of thing
So look, you should just wish, bearing grand feelings.
But now, which one are you?

Sensitive words surge forth,
But they don’t fulfil you. Without waiting, you continue on.
You have this and that, but still…
“It’s not enough! I want more!”
I guess that’s what you’d say?

It’s simple! I’ll raise a revolution in the world
And blast common sense to the wind.
With a leap, leap, leap, I hopped away.
Isn’t just that enough?
Why not change your perception?
I’m a happy egoist, greedier than anyone else!

(1.2.3.4) This isn’t bad!
(1.2.3.4) It’s pretty normal.
(1.2.3.4) Do you get it?
(1.2.3.4) It’s not over yet!

I wanna be happier than you, than them,
Than everyone else!
Forcing myself, standing on tiptoe, stretching out my hand…
No matter what I do, I’ll never reach it!

(3, go!)
1, 2, 3! They’d like to spend their time smiling.
Even common happiness is fine.
What’s the average of millions of happinesses? Everyone wants more than that. (1)
Is it right to define the theory of happiness in that way?
After all, it’s just talking about someone else.
Occasionally, the rabbit of happiness
Says bye bye – farewell!
Though you give chase, look! She’s getting away! La la la…

(1) 1億万 [ichiokuman] is literally either 100 million or 100 million multiplied by 10 thousand. 100 million is a significant number, as it is roughly the size of the Japanese population. [Reference]

英訳だけです。申し訳ありません。

I didn’t even need to look at the album’s website to know that the lyrics to this song were written by kaztora. They have such a… distinct lyrical style. If azuki’s lyrics are a heartening, full-course meal, kaztora’s lyrics are red hot chilies. They’re just so spicy.

Anyway, 大地獄 [daijigoku] is contrasted with plain old 地獄 [jigoku – Hell]. ‘Grand Hell’ sounds a bit weird, so I went a bit further and used Avīci, which is apparently the lowest level of Hell.

How frustrating, how frustrating!
I am unaware of the revival of my spirit.
To think that I loved you,
Who I left behind…

Advance, take a look, then retreat!
When I realised it, I was in Higan.
You called out to me, but who are you? Hah.
Court is now in session!

Okay – Heaven or hell? On top of that, there’s Avīci.
Who lives? Who dies? Their voices fly about (Ran ran raran).

You put on a virtuous face and lived with all you might.
So what? This is my deliberation:
Do it once more and continue onward.

60 years. 60 years.
With everything on the line, I spun round and round.
I hear your nostalgic voice.
I loved you…

As seen in the Great Leap Forward and the Taika Reform,
Greed is ultimately justice.
Even if it tears me apart,
I’ll tell you…

Okay – Heaven or Hell? On top of that, there’s also Hades.
Who lives, and who dies? I can’t hear! (Ran ran raran).

I don’t give a damn about love. Don’t be vague with me!
Who cares, anyway.
The angry roars fly past in unison.

Heaven, Hell, Avīci. How about the first one?
(Heaven, Hell, Avīci.)
Heaven, Hell, Avīci. How about the second one?
(Heaven, Hell, Avīci.)
Heaven! (Hell!) Heaven! (Hell!)
Heaven, Hell, Avīci. Ah!
Which one?

So, Heaven or Hell? I’d better decide soon.
Who falls, who ascends? I can’t weigh it up. (Ran ran raran.)

There are fine virtuous people, and terrible villains…
But the only ones I can’t stand are liars.

Alright – court is back in session. Merciful criminals, this way, please.
This is it: your final trial. There’s no more after this. (Ran ran raran.)

Okay – innocent or guilty? Or maybe even false charges?
Who cares, anyway.
You know, only God knows
The mischievous judgements of fate.
